Enhancements in Cloud Condensation Nuclei Activity From Turbulent Fluctuations in Supersaturation

چکیده

Abstract The effect of aerosols on the properties clouds is a large source uncertainty in predictions weather and climate. These aerosol‐cloud interactions depend critically ability aerosol particles to form cloud droplets. A challenge modeling representation between turbulence microphysics. Turbulent mixing leads small‐scale fluctuations water vapor temperature that are unresolved large‐scale atmospheric models. To quantify impact turbulent condensation nuclei (CCN) activation, we used high‐resolution Large Eddy Simulation convective chamber drive particle‐based microphysics simulations. We show strongly CCN activity. Once activated, relatively long timescales evaporation compared causes droplets persist subsaturated regions, which further increases droplet concentrations.

Assessment of cloud supersaturation by size-resolved aerosol particle and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) measurements

In this study we show how size-resolved measurements of aerosol particles and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) can be used to characterize the supersaturation of water vapor in a cloud. The method was developed and applied during the ACRIDICON-Zugspitze campaign (17 September to 4 October 2012) at the high-Alpine research station Schneefernerhaus (German Alps, 2650 m a.s.l.). Number size distrib...

Aerosol hygroscopicity and cloud condensation nuclei activity during the ACExp campaign: implications for cloud condensation nuclei parameterization

Aerosol hygroscopicity and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activity under background conditions and during pollution events are investigated during the AerosolCCN-Cloud Closure Experiment (ACExp) campaign conducted at Xianghe, China in summer 2013. A gradual increase in size-resolved activation ratio (AR) with particle diameter (Dp) suggests that aerosol particles have different hygroscopicitie...

Cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activity of aliphatic amine secondary aerosol

Aliphatic amines can form secondary aerosol via oxidation with atmospheric radicals (e.g., hydroxyl radical and nitrate radical). The particle can contain both secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and inorganic salts. The ratio of organic to inorganic materials in the particulate phase influences aerosol hygroscopicity and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activity. SOA formed from trimethylamine (TMA...

Impact of aerosol composition on cloud condensation nuclei activity

The impact of aerosol composition on cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activity were analyzed in this study based on field experiments carried out at downtown Tianjin, China in September 2010. In the experiments, the CCN measurements were performed at supersaturation (SS) of 0.1 %, 0.2 % and 0.4 % using a thermal-gradient diffusion chamber (DMT CCNC), whereas the aerosol size distribution and com...
